Understanding the implications of gravity pour and low-pressure counter gravity filling of permanent molds

The question casting designers and procurement specialitists ask us most often is, “Which process, gravity or low pressure, is better suited for my permanent mold aluminum casting needs? The short answer is, “It depends.”

At ATEK Metal Technologies, we utilize both processes. Although they overlap to some extent, they are not interchangeable. Each offers distinct benefits and imposes critical limitations. The selection of the most suitable process depends on the following factors:

  • Casting size and weight
  • Quantity demand during a given period of time
  • Casting design
  • Mechanical properties and integrity requirements

In this white paper we’ll characterize the differences between the gravity poured permanent mold (GPPM) process and the low pressure permanent mold (LPPM) process. We’ll discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each process to help you reach your own conclusions.
